West Highland Way 2010

May 24th 2010 - Day 0: London to Glasgow

I spent the train journey enjoying a novel I had been given as a Christmas gift. Exams now over with, I was at liberty to read what I wanted – which was the only reason I was hauling a huge hardcover book with me on this trip.

The weather was beautiful as we whisked north. In fact we’d been having a mini heat wave the last few days and I was hoping that our luck and the weather would hold.

Jacquie had opted to take an earlier train to Glasgow to meet up with her mum and spend some time in the city, as she had lived there for several years. She had agreed to come and meet me at the train station when I arrived early evening. In fact, when I arrived, there was a whole welcoming committee there to greet me – Jacquie, her mum Susan, and Susan’s friend Alison. We were staying in two twin rooms at the Brunswick Hotel in Merchant City, which was nice, the beds were comfortable and the rooms clean, but came in at the priciest night of the trip by far.

We opted for dinner and drinks out on the town, and retired at a reasonable hour given that we had to be at the Milngavie (pronounced Mull-guy) train station for 9am to drop off our bags.
